UK Border Agency make sweeping changes to the Au Pair Visa Category

On November 27th, 2008, the UK Border Agency announced the closure of a number of programs that had previously been popular with young people from overseas. The following schemes were affected: -

  • Au pairs
  • Gap year
  • Japan: Youth Exchange Scheme
  • Visiting religious workers and religious workers in non-pastoral roles
  • Overseas government employees
  • Voluntary workers
  • Working holidaymakers

The all encompassing Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) was introduced instead. It forms part of the new points based immigration system.
