Why we are a unique au pair agency

At 1st Choice Au Pairs we recognise that the process of choosing someone to come and live as part of the family is something deserving of much care and attention. This is why we have developed our unique and unrivalled approach in the selection, placement and ongoing support of families and au pairs.

We have a direct relationship with both our families and au pair candidates. Our au pairs are not going through another 3rd party agency, so we have met them and are getting to know them from the very beginning of their search for a family.

History

1st Choice Au Pairs was established in 2004 and is a family business. Jay had alwas done a lot of travelling with his previous jobs, sometimes working on projects that took him out of the country for many months at a time. With three children ourselves, we found that hosting an au pair was the ideal solution in having an extra pair of adult hands around to help out during the week.

What was less than perfect seemed to be the recruitment process. We were often left dissapointed by the lack of detailed information available about prospective au pair candidates.

Lack of Information

Details about candidates was sketchy, with agencies only forwarding what they had received by FAX or email from other overseas overseas. Often the documents lacked translation and when further clarification was sought about a candidate, it wasn't possible to speak to the person who'd actually interviewed them.

Eliminating the risks

The emergence of internet based agencies created more choice, but caused great concern about the lack of checks. From an au pair's point of view, this method was also seen to be high risk, with young girls travelling to a foreign country and putting all their trust in people they had no idea about, and if things don't work out then there is no support for them.

So the challenge was to create a highly professional agency that would reinvent how the entire process worked, giving greater peace of mind for families and au pairs alike. 1st Choice Au Pairs was born.

Our Team

Jay

Working for 20 years in the high tech world of Telecoms, Jay has also worked as an independent business consultant - including most recently consulting for a national provider of Children's Homes and Residential Schools. Jay decided to use his knowledge of new technology and change management experience to reinvent this service business from scratch and so 1st Choice Au Pairs was born.

Theresa

Theresa is a qualified registered general nurse and mother of three children. Nursing has meant early, late and night shifts, and Theresa has managed to juggle work and home life with the help of all of our au pairs. She can be found in the office a couple of days every week, and is always available to help with family visits.If we have a request for companion positions, it is usually Theresa who assesses personal care requirements.

Ramona

Ramona is a graduate of Babes Bolyai University, Cluj Napoca majoring in European Studies. She was initially helping the agency to organise events in Romania and has since joined us in the UK earlier on in 2009. Ramona still travel back frequently to meet new candidates and is on hand to speak with candidates in their own language. She is from Oradea, a city in western Romania.

Suzy

Suzy is the longest serving member of the team. She has recently graduated with a masters degree in marketing from Newcastle. Suzy has worked as an au pair on two separate occasions and was our first Slovak office administrator here in the UK in 2004. Since then Suzy has regularly worked on a part time basis for the agency in Slovakia, meeting new candidates and is still lending her support.

Michael

Mike has been providing his services to the agency since the very first overseas event week in May 2004. Mike is a member of the British Psychological Society and has a Masters degree in Psychology. He has worked with many businesses over the course of the last 20 years, working as an evaluator of training requirements and providing leadership and management training.

Mihaela

Mihaela has much varied experience and has worked in journalism, sales and office management. She has a degree in Philosophy-Sociology from the university of Craiova. Mihaela helps support events across the south of Romania.
