Basic Information:

Maria is a 23 year-old Romanian girl from Herculane, a town in the southern part of Romania. She finished the Faculty of Economics last year, but she didn’t get her diploma because she didn’t pass her final exam. She works as a sales agent for a construction business, but because they don’t have many contracts now, she will be made redundant.

She wants to be an au pair because she likes children and she would like the chance to look after children from other countries, to see how they are brought up. She also wants to improve her English as she knows it is quite basic. She will be available from late January – early February.

Maria likes doing different sports (fitness and jogging), listening to music, socialising with friends and surfing the web.

She is a non smoker.

Childcare Experience:

Her aunt wanted to adopt a child and they fostered a girl who was suffering with a mental health problem (eventually they didn’t adopt her). For 5 years the girl lived with them and Maria looked after her daily. While she was a student, she lived with her aunt and her cousin, and now she is working she visits them daily. She did different activities to stimulate her imagination; she goes to a special school and Maria helps her with her homework, teaches her different games and songs. The girl goes to karate (she won 3rd place at a competition) and knows how to play the piano. She also cooks for her and assists in bathing the girl, but mainly when her aunt is not at home. Before she went to university she looked after a friend’s boy. Because his parents were working many hours, she spent a lot of time with the boy (she even spent some nights at their house). She looked after the boy for almost 5 years. She used to wake him up, wash him, cook for him, play football, draw, paint with him and other things. She also helped a friend who had a baby eighteen months ago. She helped her feeding the baby and washing him, but it was mainly when her friend had to go shopping and her husband wasn’t at home.

English Skills:

Maria’s English was basic. She understood what I was asking her, but it was difficult for her to answer in English.

Her native language is Romanian. She also speaks Spanish and Italian (beginner) and French (medium level).

Housework:

Maria is prepared to care for children and older children, to undertake light housework (tidying/ vacuuming/ dusting),washing, ironing, shopping (food/groceries), cooking for children and driving.

Character:

Maria describes herself as calm, warm hearted, friendly and sociable. She thinks she is a good friend because she knows how to listen and she always helps her friends.

Eating:

Maria doesn’t have a favorite food. She doesn’t like fast food, only home cooked meals.

Driving:

Maria passed her driving test in 2007. She drove daily, but recently she didn’t have a car so she doesn’t drive that often anymore. She said she would be confident driving in the UK.

Family:

Her Mother is 47 years old and is unemployed. Her Father is 49 and is a guard. She’s got an older brother (25 years old) who lives in Timisoara and is married there.
